Retake guide

Failed Your G1 Test? Here's What Happens Next

Failing your G1 knowledge test does not mean starting over. Your result stays valid for a year, and you only retake the section you missed. You must answer 16 of 20 questions correctly in each of the two sections.

How the retake works

Only the section you missed

Your result is valid for a year. Within that year, you rewrite only the section you did not pass — road signs or rules of the road. The section you already passed stands; you do not redo it.

16 CAD per retake

A repeat knowledge-test attempt costs 16 CAD — much less than the 159.75 CAD you paid for your G1 licence package.

Walk in, like the first time

DriveTest knowledge tests are walk-in, no appointment needed — except Toronto's Bay & College ServiceOntario, which is appointment-only. Arrive at least an hour before closing.

Untimed, marked on the spot

The test is multiple-choice with no time limit, and it's marked immediately — you'll know your result before you leave.

Your 3-step retake plan

  1. Identify the section you missed

Your test result shows exactly which section — road signs or rules of the road — you did not pass. That's the only one you need to prepare for again.

  2. Drill exactly that section

Spend your practice time only on the section you missed, instead of restudying everything.

  3. Run one full practice test

Before you go back, take one untimed 40-question exam simulation covering both sections, so you walk in confident.
